Materials testers use many different methods to determine the scratch resistance of a plastic material. Not only mechanical but also environmental influences characterize its durability.
Sand blown against a pane, a car key scraped across a display, an umbrella dragged along a shop counter – every day, plastic parts have to contend with all kinds of stresses. Some of these mechanical stresses leave scratches behind on the surfaces that can detract from the appearance or impair functionality, e.g. by obscuring the view. Ultimately, they can even cause the part to fail prematurely.
