Architects Weidenhamer und Ambos, Municharchitektur und design Hirche, NurembergSelection criteria Large sheet size to reduce the number of joints, free forming, easy to route, suitable for bonding across entire surface, velvety feel and high-class appearance, material with molded-in color, low soiling due to surface finish provided at the factory.
Description of application The freestanding exhibition unit for the new special exhibition was designed as a squared-off cylinder. The round exhibition surface (an interactive island unit that explains questions related to the everyday use of chemicals in minute detail) is clothed in a double-walled membrane. By using PLEXIGLAS® Mineral, which comes in untrimmed sheet sizes of 2 x 3m, it was possible to reduce the number of joints to a minimum. This made the rotunda’s surface appear almost perfectly homogenous. The curved segments were routed to material thickness and then displaced by 10cm before bonding, which also shifted the routed pattern. This overlap gave the structure a highly plastic effect. Since the surface was finished at the factory, there was no need for time-consuming polishing, and the white surface is virtually non-soiling.
