PLEXIGLAS® makes high-altitude flight possible

Safety at an altitude of 10,000 meters.

It's thanks to the extraordinary durability of PLEXIGLAS® that flights at altitudes of 10,000 meters are at all conceivable. The breakproof plastic holds up magnificently against inside cabin pressure, double-digit subzero temperatures outside, and harsh UV radiation relentlessly bombarding the cabin windows. And PLEXIGLAS® offers the further advantage of protecting passengers behind the window pane from this kind of radiation. The windows filter out the aggressive radiation while letting in the warming sunlight.

Aircraft glazing was one of the first applications for cast PLEXIGLAS®. Engineers and pilots alike enthused over the elegant and streamlined cockpits allowing unprecedented all-round visibility. The growing numbers of passengers also benefited from the novel material. And little has changed in the intervening years. Today, the material remains the plastic of choice in the aviation industry.

It offers outstanding optical properties, is lightweight, resists temperature changes and shows unsurpassed weather resistance. PLEXIGLAS® has excellent mechanical properties, is easy to form and polish and thus the ideal product for glazing applications in the aviation industry. The product has gained an excellent reputation both in civil and military aviation over the course of the decades. The majority of all Airbus jets have cabin windows made of PLEXIGLAS®.

  • Helicopters
PLEXIGLAS® GS 245 has been the selected material for this application for many years. Its unsurpassed properties in this field are excellent, distortion-free optics, maximum transmission combined with UV protection for the pilot, and low weight combined with high rigidity.
  • Civil Aviation – Cabin Windows
Pressurized cabin windows are safety-relevant components exposed to high mechanical and thermal stress. For years, the aviation industry has been relying on windows made from stretched PLEXIGLAS® GS 249.
  • Fighter Planes
Stretched PLEXIGLAS® GS 249 is excellently suited for canopies and windshields in fighter planes. The combination of excellent optics, long service life and mechanical stability has made this material the ideal choice for this application for many years.
